Q&A with Dr. G

Dr. Nora Gindi Answers Your Eye Care Questions

What is Low Vision?

Low Vision is when a person has a visual acuity of 20/80 or worse in the State of Florida. It refers to people who are nearly blind, or considered legally blind, or only have partial vision – meaning they may only have a glass eye, or visual field loss in one or even both eyes. This can be a result of traumatic brain injury, any kind of accident or disease, such as stroke.

A person can also be born with Low Vision, such as with glaucoma and cataracts. The distinction is if the vision is correctable beyond 20/70 without using a prescription over an 8 diopter, whether it’s minus or plus, that’s the cut off. If the vision cannot be corrected with a prescription lens of + or – 8-diopter, or below, then the vision is considered Low Vision.
